Description

An interesting item – the term “Red Light District” dates back to the early days of railroading. Railroad crews used lanterns for signaling and for light, lanterns used different colored lenses for different jobs. Your lantern was your lifeline in a railroad yard and was carried with you at all times, it was a tool of the trade. Railroad workers are a hard working bunch. Stores, bars, hotels and brothels sprang up along the railroads to cater to these workers needs and vices. When a railroad worker paid a visit, the men would leave the red lantern on the porch to ensure the train would stop to pick them up.
